Sorry about the delay, between being stone cold sick for a week and not really knowing how to word/express my feelings on the matter, it's taken me a bit of time to figure out how to continue on. That being said, last time this rule was modified, it was done hastily and a bit messy, which has clearly caused some issues, while solving others, instead of creating a happy medium. I'm looking to avoid that, and amend the rule once and for all. I'll start this post off with an anecdote. For those of you who have been here since before the beginning (prior to my full ownership), we first briefly started out a few servers under a gaming community. This community was extremely PC - absolutely 0 bigoted language was tolerated. No racism, sexism, hell, you couldn't even call someone a 'fag' if you wanted. It was so PC that several of us (myself included) would kind of isolate ourselves from the main group, just so we could talk however we wanted to. Now, it wasn't super toxic or hardcore racist or anything, if some shit came out, it came out and we didn't have to worry about it. Now that's exactly what I didn't want this to be. I hated needing to watch every single stupid little thing I said. When I initially took ownership, that was one of the first things I wanted to change, so I did. Rule #1 did not encompass saying 'oh what's up my nigga' or anything like that. If someone said it, it flew and was fine. However, this made some players increasingly uncomfortable, and one night ended up boiling down to a debate between myself and a few other regulars on the server about usage of the 'n' word completely. While I didn't necessarily agree that forbidding the 'n' word in its entirety, I could definitely see others concerns with allowing its usage leading to an unwelcoming environment for many, so the rule was changed. Now, I start seeing flashbacks of the old community. Fragments of the community are hanging out/playing elsewhere, and we're missing out on potentially good players, all due to a singular word that isn't being allowed. We're not here to be politically correct. We're not supposed to be the moral upstanding citizens of the internet. We're just here to play some damn games and have fun, but sometimes having fun means having a couple rules to make it more fun for everyone, and a little less toxic. That being said, I'm still not convinced any possible change would be a positive one for the community. While this allows people to speak more freely, this also opens avenues of toxicity and increased prejudice. While I think everyone in here agrees that the hard R and racial attacks are not ok, I still really just don't like this scenario. I think we all know that if this rule gets changed, it's going to be a shit storm for quite some time to come, and we're going to be having a whole load of kiddies dropping n bombs all the time 'just because they can'. If I had the agreement of many in the community to try and make this transition a little bit smoother for everyone by perhaps 'easing in' a potential rule change instead of dropping it like a bomb, that would be a massive help. I definitely want to have a little bit more of a conversation on the topic and some discussion with the admins to see how we can accommodate a change until anything goes into effect.
