2020 In Review

Another year, another heavily delayed annual recap! 😛

This year was a real special one - we celebrated our half decade anniversary. Never in my wildest imagination did I ever think we would get to this size, for this long, and I continue to be humbled on a daily basis by the kindness and generosity our amazing members have to offer each other.

As always, here are some fun statistics from the year of 2020:

Skill Surf:
  • In 2020, we had 157,079 unique players from 148 different countries.
  • We had 46.58 years of play time on surf this year, that's a lot of dedication!
  • The player with the most time in 2020 had a whopping 1,369 hours!
  • We currently have 836 maps in rotation throughout all of our servers, this is up 94 since last year when I made the year in review post.
  • In 2020, we had a ton of new personal bests! This includes 88,246 bonus completions, 302,242 map completions, and 2,405,797 stage completions.
  • The quickest map time in 2020 was completed by josh, on surf_abstract_final in 15.117 seconds. The slowest map time of 2020 was 3 hours, 23 minutes, and 1 second on surf_lt_omnific_fix. Hey, a completion is a completion!
  • The most popular map by playtime was surf_classics3, with 9,054 hours played. That is 377 days of play time. This is actually less playtime than last year's most popular map (surf_kitsune) by over 2,000 hours, which indicates a greater variety of maps are being enjoyed.
  • 29% of connecting players are free-to-play, non-prime players. This is an increase of 10% from last year.

Competitive Servers:
  • In 2020, we had 175,715 unique players from 163 different countries.
  • We had 58.1 years of play time on our competitive servers this year. That's over a 20% increase in playtime since last year, despite seeing slightly less unique players. Lots of returning, dedicated gamers here! 💪
  • The most popular map for Retakes is de_mirage, followed by de_cache, and de_inferno, exactly the same as last year.
  • The most popular maps on the 1v1 Arenas servers are am_redline_64, am_basement, and am_grass2. Redline is by far the most popular by a wide margin.
  • 1v1 Arenas: The players with the most wins (lifetime of server) have 84,310, 76,061, and 46,074 respectively.
  • Retakes: The player with the most kills (lifetime of server) has 88,216 kills, 13,404 assists, and 54,761 deaths. The player with the most deaths (71,651) has 80,611 kills.
  • 25% of connecting players are free-to-play, non-prime players, this is an increase of 9% from last year.
KZ Servers:
  • In 2020, we had 64,795 unique players from 142 different countries.
  • We had 14 years of play time on our KZ servers this year.
  • The most popular map by playtime was kz_spacemario_h, with 3,489 hours. kz_colors_v2 squeaked right behind it at second place with 3,448 hours. Same maps as last year!
  • The player who had the most play time in 2020 racked up 1,936 hours, with the #2 slot having 1,774 hours.
  • 16.5% of connecting players are free-to-play, non-prime players. This consistently remains a significantly lower percentage than all other modes, likely due to the complexity of movement mechanics required in KZ.
Bhop:
  • In 2020, we had 39,366 unique players from 117 different countries.
  • We had 4.6 years of play time on our bhop server this year!
  • The most popular map was bhop_arcane with 524 hours, followed by bhop_exodus_fix with 508 hours.
  • In 2020, we had 76,340 new personal times.
  • At the time of this post, we have a whopping 1,597 maps on rotation! This is 384 maps more than last year, big thanks to @mbhound
  • The player with most time in 2020 has 1,378 hours.
  • 22% of connecting players are free-to-play, non-prime players.
Miscellaneous:
  • We had 8,568 automatic anti-cheat bans in 2020, this number does not include manual bans. This is the first year we have seen an actual decrease in anti-cheat bans, which may suggest that VAC/Overwatch systems are more impactful for community servers.
  • 7,264 alternate accounts of cheaters/other permanently banned players have attempted to rejoin and have gotten auto-banned, an 18.7% decrease from last year.
  • As of the end of 2020, we now have over 2,500 people on Discord, over 30% more folks since last year!
  • 2,797 people have registered here on the website in 2020.
  • There were over 8.5 million lines of chat in our servers in 2020. A cool thing I wish we could track is how many hours of voice chat has been used.
  • 794 unique donors contributed to keeping our community up and running in 2020. Thank you so very much for your continued support and belief in our community!

A huge, huge shout out to all the teams that make this all possible - Administration, Moderation, Operations, and Events. Without your volunteer support none of this would be possible!

Here's to a better 2021 for us all, cheers! 😀
